This has been a long week. Not really, but kinda sorda.
Monday: Most normal day. Worked, no biggie.
Tuesday: Woke up at the crack of dawn. No – wait – the stars were still shining when we were loading the truck. Yeah, I got up at 4:20 am (and, no, it wasn’t on purpose – Santa Cruz joke). I was at the aquarium by 5:20 and ready to work. Sorda. Well, I worked. We loaded up the truck and took off to Redlands, which was way the hell away from Long Beach. Take the 10 off the 605N and keep going for almost 50 miles. Took us a while to get there, had two programs at the school and tons of kids on the truck touching our animals. It is hard to control kids that are uber excited about being able to touch these tide pool critters and baby swell sharks, but we have to, for the safety of said critters – and that is exhausting. I also got to play the ‘delivery person’ in the program, which is fun. I was nervous because I had never done it before, but it really is a fantastically easy part, and come on guys, we all know I can do some theater, right? It really is a part that you can’t mess up, so it was fun to play.
Today: Same story. Went out on outreach again, but this time we went to Tustin, which is much closer than the day before. Instead of sixth graders, like the day before, we had third graders, which are like, the perfect kids to teach and play with. They are old enough to use some restraint, their attention span is good, and they still like to have fun. They haven’t been corrupted as much by trying to ‘play cool’. It is so much fun to see the kids get really excited about our program and all the thanks we get at the end. They always tell us that we have the best job ever. (That’s because they don’t know it’s part time, pays squat, and that we also do all the general maintenance on the truck, aside from the crazy set-up everyday. They only see the fun stuff, but don’t we all?) Anyway, I love going out on outreach.
This Friday, I also get to do a sleepover program at the aquarium. I am excited about that as well. I am not sure what to expect, but I’ll let you know how that goes.
And right now, as I type this, mi babe is driving over to come visit. *sigh* July is such a long ways away. Nothing official right now, but it looks like July 10th will be the big day. Should give us enough time to plan and save.
