Based on what I’ve been taught about motor planning in the brain etc I’d be very surprised if this is a very near-future project… if it is I’m tempted to track down all the science, learn about it and talk about it in my exams.

Do you care for detailed neuroscience? Probably not, I imagine that’s just me, but let me know if you want some and I can supply it.

  I dunno, it was a really short article based on a [hopefully]much longer article. Detailed? Maybe not too much, but info is always great. They’ve got it kinda working on dogfish already, so moving on to another shark species shouldn’t be too difficult.

    I read about this a few months ago in a science journal — not the sharks, just about the other organisms mentioned in the article. It said it was so far pretty successful, and that the transfer to so-called higher level species would perhaps unravel rather fast. A tiny note of impending doom was implied, heh. It was just a mention, however — shorter than this, even. But yeah, if they can do it with dogfish, I’d imagine it would be a short amount of time before they could do it on any other shark species, not to say it’d be easy.

Wasn’t the Navy trying to have dolphins spy some years back? I suppose the government doesn’t want to ruin Flipper’s image if they’re switching to sharks.

  I dunno about dolphin spies, but they do have a Marine Mammal program. They can effectively train dolphins to find sea mines. We had a couple of their dolphins at the Long Marine Lab at UCSC.

You’d be amazed at the things the Navy researches. The mammal program you linked to is just the tip of it. Interesting stuff. I’ll try and remember to ask my brother more about it and see if he’ll be coming in contact with any of it now he’s in Hawaii.
