Pimp Mag Vol. 1 Issue 1

The First

Welcome to my first issue of Pimp Mag. This is mostly a self-serving (hopefully) weekly newsletter where I can come along and rec. some of my favorite things at the moment. I hope that you will find it interesting and that you will discuss some of these things with me and the rest of the flist. 😀

I want to start off every issue with a bit of eye candy, and to be honest, about 99% of it will come from Flickr. Why? Because there is an endless supply of wonderful eye candy to suit every mood on there. I love the community and being able to pimp someone’s work from there makes me feel proud to be a teensy little spec in the fabric of the Flickr being.

This week, eyecandyforthebrokenhearted (ECBH) has captured my heart. Her photos keep me going to her pages so that I can look at them over and over again. To the right, she pictures Charlie, one of her regular models, as an “Orchid Princess”. ECBH’s aesthetic comes blazing through her wonderful colors, costumes, poses, and editing. She takes creative portraiture and illustrative photography and runs with them! She has been featured in a slough of magazines, including Australian Rolling Stone. She can also be found on lj at [info]_icandy_on MySpace, and at her site.

USBCell

USBCell is a company after my own heart. With all the devices that we own that take up juice in the form of AA batteries, I was recently asking a few gamers what they used in their wireless controllers. Most people opt for some form of a rechargeable, and this company has taken that to a whole new level. They have taken the typical NiMH battery, and gotten rid of the charger almost completely! You can now plug them into any number of ports on your computer, DVR, gaming system, etc – anywhere that you you can plug in a USB component!

They are also working on AAA models, as well as other sizes, including popular cell phones! They are currently only available in the UK and Ireland, but will hopefully come to a store near you (if you aren’t in the UK already)! They are a little pricey, but when factoring in the convenience, ease of use, environmental issues, and that you don’t have to buy a charger, they can be well worth it. It seems like a technology that can really take off rather easily, so I hope to see competetive pricing in a couple of years at most.

Pop-up goodness!

I probably speak for most of you when I say that we all love books. Most of us go for the kind of books that don’t have pictures most of the time, but sometimes it is just so much fun to be wowed by a book’s looks. Robert Sabuda has some of the most amazing pop-up books out there – hands down. Pictured to the right is his book Encyclopedia Prehistorica Sharks and Other Sea Monsters: The Definitive Pop-Up. Sabuda puts to paper some of the most awesome engineering I have ever seen between two covers. The photo does not do this book justice. And if you are not a fan of sharks so much, try out Encyclopedia Prehistorica Dinosaurs: The Definitive Pop-Up or Winter’s Tale: An Original Pop-up Journey.

Fandom Pimping

It is hard to not want to pimp the fandom in one way or another, so why resist? If you somehow missed my earlier post, let me introduce you to a ‘sketch’ that Soda made just for me.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

She’s a fabulous artist, as most of you already know. You can find more of her Sirius creations on our site here.

And not so much about the fandom, only because it is on our site, we have Cinéma Immérité. Our Cinema forum has started its own film club, and this round had a poll featuring staff suggestions ranging from Rear Window to Whale Rider. Labyrinth won the poll, and we are currently in watching mode. Stop by if you have never seen it and want to, or if it has been a while since you last saw this David Bowie masterpiece! 😀

I hope you found something of interest in there, and if you didn’t I hope that next time will be more to your liking!  ♥
